Book description:
Michigan’s African Americans played vital roles in the Civil War and the fight for freedom. The 1st Michigan Colored Infantry, over 1,500 strong, helped win key battles. Civilian Black men and women also made significant, previously unrecognized contributions to liberty. Among them, William Dollarson escaped slavery, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad in Detroit, and fought with Michigan’s top general. Warriors for Liberty marks the 160th anniversary of the regiment’s mustering, offering groundbreaking insights into the heroism of Michigan's African American community. Included is a first-person account from victims of the 1863 Detroit riot, highlighting their greater sacrifice.
